Create a Visual Mood Board
Sometimes words just don’t cut it. Images on the other hand, can show a lot. And when we try to tap into our intuition when choosing images, its really interesting what comes out in the wash!
Gather together a selection of magazines (books too if you don’t mind them being cut up) - any kind of printed visual material - leaflets, flyers, old printed photos that you don’t want to keep, postcards, greetings cards etc etc.
Grab a sheet of paper at least A3 size ideally, and some scissors and a glue stick (that’s a messy as it gets honestly!).
Get your child to rip out anything that they’re attracted to, or curious about. Try to get them to do it without thinking too much about what it is, or why they like it. This needs to be as instinctive as possible.
They can also rip out words or phrases they like as well.
When a few things have been selected, start to create a mood-board.
It could be something that simply represents who they are; or something they aspire to be (a vision-board); or it may contain something they’re worried about.
Judge yourself how far to go with questioning why they’ve made certain choices. Let me more of a fun activity than an opportunity for a big discussion.
Maybe you could do one too - and ask them what they think of yours!
My dog (Otis) with my daughter’s visual mood-board. I produced a PDF on how to do a vision-board session with your kids - email me if you’d like me to send it to you!
