Creative Thinking Prompt w/c 8 January 2024
Welcome to the first of your weekly CREATIVE THINKING PROMPTS! I'm so excited to deliver these to you every Sunday evening, so you can have them in mind as you go about your day-to-day lives the following week.
These prompts will:
Make it super easy for you to ‘be creative’.
Help you think more creatively on a regular basis.
Encourage you to look at things, situations, problems, and the world, in a different way, expanding your mind and fuelling your imagination.
Be childlike again, invest in your curiosity, and seek out joy.
Enable you to appreciate the beauty and wonder of the ‘everyday’.
January’s theme…
“Perception: It's all smoke and mirrors”
“In the realm of smoke and mirrors, perception is both the cage
and the key to freedom.”
Our perception of reality can be both limiting and liberating. It can restrict our view of the world, keeping us in a ‘cage’ of what we already know.
But if we challenge our perceptions of the world, and question them, this can be the key to unlocking our creativity.
I love this quote from “Smoke and Mirrors” (a collection of short stories and poems by Neil Gaiman, 1998) It encapsulates what I'd like you to think about this month, with the help of the prompts I'll send you.
So let's get on with it shall we?!
Creative Thinking Prompt (w/c 8 January 2024)
REFLECTIONS IN WINDOWS
Think about how the reflections we see in windows distort or alter our perception of reality.
How do they alter a particular image or a view?
What do the reflections add, if anything?
How does what we see change as we change our position?
What other influences impact our perception of that reflection?
Do you have to adjust the focus of your gaze in order to see ‘through’ a reflection?
How does the contrast of what's inside and what's outside influence the ‘effectiveness’ of the scene.
Here are a few examples to inspire your thoughts as you go about your week.
A simple Google search brought up these images, which show how interesting this can be!
And these were taken on a trip to a museum. We suddenly realised that our reflection could be seen on the glass cases which the exhibits were displayed in. This meant we could be ghostly figures within the suits of armour!
How do these prompts impact your creativity?
Creativity is all about exploring new views and expanding what we already know. Looking at our perception in this way develops new neural pathways in our brains - pathways that may have been laying dormant! The more we can activate new areas within our brains, the more creative we will be in many different situations and areas of our lives.
